Buchanan is not a repeated in a way that has the pattern pivoted on a stripe. Rather, it is repeated, in full, the same order. It is one of the odd tartans that do this.
Significance: It is NOT one of the tartans that can be bought in double width and cut/splice to make a kilt. You have to get the full length, and then have the material for 2 kilts. One would be like Dirk's and one Turpin's (only with exact matching colors and size).
Just my observation.
Looks like you 2 are having a BLAST!!!
I suspect it's a simple matter of fabric and kiltmaker difference. Dirk's looks to be a sportkilt (if I am not mistaken), where as Turpin's kilt appears to have a tighter weave and I suspect wool or PV. Correct me if I am wrong lads....
