it isn't difficult, just a little tedious.
Historically, people just bunched it up, but most who wear the great kilt at various events try to pleat on the stripe or sett. I can do mine in about 15 minutes. but I have done it many, many times.
As long as you have a nice smooth place to do it, it isn't too bad.
