I'd recommend www.flybe.com
then also WWW.bmibaby.com
& http://www.aerarann.com/
to a lesser extent www.easyjet .com
and if you are stuck www.ryanair.com
If you are planning a few months ahead there is no reason why you cant get internal return flights from places like Birmingham, luton, belfast and the like for less than £50
Flying shouldn't be a problem. My brother-in-law fly for a major airline and we get international round trip tickets for about $200 a piece.. We are going to fly in to Italy and fly out of Scotland. The rest will be Trains, boats, feet, and cars.. That's what I'm nervous about, oh and hostels.

I was last year backpacking around Scotland (Stirling, Inverness, Drumnadrochit, Skye, Dumfries and Glasgow) and I go again this summer (Edinburgh, Stirling, Pitlochry, Braemar, Kirkwall (Orkneys) and Glasgow) from August 2nd to the 14th. As u asked about advice, I will give u some info from my own experience.
For the hostels I use to sleep on dormitories, as I travel alone and love to mix with the local fauna, so my budget goes around 15 to 19 pounds per night max. Regarding transport, I advise to forget about train except if there's no other option. I'd prefer bus by far, if we talk about price matters, of course!... on www.megabus.co.uk you will find some interesting deals (last year I went London to Edinb. for 5 pounds). Regarding Hostels, more or less I didn't had many bad experiences, except for one in Glasgow called Bluesky Backpackers, close to Sauchiehall St.... it's really funny if u want to have a party, but it's the most stinky, dirty, noisy and ugly of all... but well... u can't ask too much for just 9 pounds a night uh? If u stop in Dumfries of course u must stop at Ferintosh... no need to comment too much more about this, as u could read a lot about on many posts here... I simply felt better than at home!
Well... in any case I'd be glad to help on this as much as I can,.... even when it's been long since I could come and stay on the site for more than 30 mins. after reading the usual 3500-4000 posts!...
Anyway,... for those who still remember me...
SALUD!

Just looking through the results of the poll, it seems I voted but didn't post.
I lived in Scotland as a child, made numerous visits as an adult and hope to take my wife to Scotland and Ireland in the next couple of years.
