It's interesting how many of them were depicted smoking.

I wondered who would notice that. When I was growing up non-smokers were the exception rather than the rule. Nowadays it is very non-PC to smoke. Fashions change very much like the dress styles in these pictures.

I grew up in a strange religeon that forbade smoking, so I've always noticed when people choose to smoke. Oh, and yes, thank you, I'm much better now.

The patent leather shoes with the buckles must be almost impossible to find today. I have seen a pair worn with formal dress, but I haven't any idea how old they were.

    Warning.

I bought a pair of those some months ago in an Ebay auction. About the only good thing I can say about them is that the seller agreed to take them back and refund the cost of postage. They were incredibly flimsily made. The seams had loose threads, the buckles were tarnished even though new, the leather straps were so stiff that they already had permanent bends, and the lining of the soles were put in haphazardly and already coming out. They were also at least a size smaller than advertised. The patent leather did have a nice shine.

There is a thread here in which they are mentioned.

That's probably why so few of those smart velvet dress jackets have survived to the present day - ruined by ciggy ash .

Seriously interesting posts and pictures Phil and Todd.
