I do recommend pockets, just love 'em. I've been kilted since January of this year an the one thing I've missed were pant's pocket. Imagine the look of me kilted in a bar, groping for missing pockets. My FK has hidden front slash pockets and they are a fantastic. Only wish these pockets were availiable on the more traditional styled kilts!

If the modern casual kilt is far enough removed from a "Scottish" kilt, could not the modern sporran be viewed as the same. I feel that the modern kilt and many of the accessories are an evolvement powered by necessity.

I'm going to take the contrary position. I do like to wear my sporran with my utilikilt. Apart from the joys of putting my cell phone on vibrate, I like the location better for keys, wallet, etc.
Plus, if you use those big pockets to their proper purpose (beer storage), there isn't enough room for anything else.

I think with a UK a sporran is not recommended: the snaps on a UK mimic the sporran shape anyway. But on a kilt with an unadorned apron I'd point out that if modesty is a concern, a sporran can help (though I know it's not a fig leaf!). Of course maybe someone is going for the Rolling Stones "Sticky Fingers" album cover look.

I think it depends on the kilt, the fit, and the personal preference. --rob--------

I never wear a Sporran with my UK, but I do like to hang things off the front beltloops (flash drive holder, small utility knife) while working. I also use two "key keepers" (think sporran hanger with mondo clip) to hold keys or other dangle parts that help.............

Well being a colonial myself, and somewhat new to kilts, I have to say that I prefer them not with pockets and fitting up high, where the traditional approach puts them. Don't neccesarily have to be tartan to make me happy, or any particular amount of yardage, but I quit carrying stuff in my pockets even wearing jeans many years ago. (mostly a side effect of working at home, no need to carry stuff).

Part of the idea behind wearing a kilt is you have a taken a big step away from what everyone else is doing, thereby giving yourself license to experiment with whatever suits your fancy.

Boy, I'm with Kilted in Seattle on this. Play, have fun.
Would I wear that kilt with a sporran? Probably not. Do I care if someone else does? Nope.

A while back I was over on the Kaibab Paiute reservation on the Arizona Strip and found a beautiful Shoshone made deerskin pouch in the gift shop. Perfect for a sporran. Sometimes wear it with a Utilikilt as in this pic shot right after I bought it.

Not a party outfit for sure, but works for bumming around the high desert on a hot day.
