They are nice looking uniforms, and I know the solid blue with bloodstripe evokes the dress blues, but I just can't help thinking they would look that much better with Leatherneck tartan kilts ...

I agree. But then, I never really thought the bright blue trousers looked right with the dress uniform either.

I'd agree with you---except for the blood stripe. Somehow the whole kit looked better when I'd earned that. (And I'm speaking strictly of aesthetics, not "pride of accomplishment"---although there was that too.)

That jacket modification really looks sharp. And the dress blue kilt is perhaps more authentic, since it echoes the dress uniform. Reminds me of the Irish Regiments and their use of green and saffron. Since there is no military connection with the Highlands I think the solid color is more appropriate.
