the guy in the kilts is the last to know
Yesterday was a cool gloomy sort of day so I went grocery shopping. Kilted, I cana't be that way working so I take every chance I get.
As I am standing at the checkout, an older lady comments 'It was a lovely parade, wasn't it?' I would rather practice escrima without gear than watch a parade, so I enquire what and where. It turns out that a small town 30 miles from us had their yearly celebration that weekend. Some of the Shriners showed up kilted AND there were a couple of pipers in the parade!
Once again I miss out on the chance
Sigh, maybe next year.

I enjoy doing Parades as a Shriner, Kids love getting beads and for less than .10 each you can make alot of kids happy. I buy beads by the cases... I go through about 30 dozens beads each Parade.. I do about 16 Parades a year.

Somewhat to my surprise, that sounds like fun... what's it take to be a Shriner, anyway?

You have to be a Freemason, for starters (and a Master Mason at that).

Participating is another matter altogether. Have run floats, marched, been in the Navy Choir, but spectating - have to be an awful special parade for that. Shriners are known for making the day at parades. Good show!

As you can see on three occassions, we do two parades in one day.
To answer your question Mr. MacDougall, You have to be a Mason first.
For more information you can go to www.egyptshrine.org
The parades are fun, but the greatest thing about being a Shriner is the kids that we help at our 22 Shriner Hospitals for Children in North America

The Greatest Parade that I have seen was July 4th 2006 here in Tampa. We had what we called Shrine Imperial. The Parade had members from 191 shrines in North America. It was three hours long, all Shrine only.

Mr. MacDougall,
There are very few, that understand that. We not only raise money for our hospitals, but raise money for Shriners Research Center. That ends up in other hospitals.
As a member of the Shrine Clown unit, I raise alot of money for Burn research. The Boston Shriners Hospital for Children is the leader in Burn Research. The Shriners Hospital in Boston is a 30-bed pediatric burn hospital providing comprehensive acute care and reconstructive and rehabilitative care to children who have been burned. There is no charge to the patient or family for any of the medical care or services provided by Shriners Hospitals. This hospital is one of 22 Shriners Hospitals throughout North America.
