Well, after meeting his teacher last night, and making her and the principal aware of his choice, my son was off to his first day of school, kilted.
His mother and I slipped a pair of jeans in his backpack, and let his teacher know they were there. He was already the center of (good) attention from both teachers and students when we finally were sent away as the embarrassing parents that we are.
I will report how the day went this evening after my first day at school kilted. I return to college full time tonight, and figure I am already nervous enough that I might as well be comfortable in class.

As an older student who has returned to college, and a man in Nursing school, I sympathise. Just remember that those people aren't (for the most part) actually your peers. Do what makes you happy, and gets you the grades you need, and don't sweat the small people.
And good on your boy. Do let us know how the first day went.
