what else could I say??
I was in the Grocery Outlet today stocknlg up on needful things.
I heard this man and woman discussing something and I was going about my own business, like a good citizen. As I neared this couple? the woman spoke up and said "may I ask you a question"? I said sure (I knew it had to do with the kilt} She asked " what do you wear under that" I said'THE SAME THING YOU WEAR". Then she sort of apologizued and said "you get that question a lot"?
I replyed "only by stuped people" and went on my way. One of the employes was stocking shelves and he said he was sorry and I told him don't be it's not your falt..

Oh the missed opportunities in life!
She could have looked you straight in the face and said
"Goodness gracious I would never had thought that Scotsmen wear pink silk thong underwear with sequinned embroidered hearts and black lace! I'll never think about Sean Connery in the same way again!"
Cheers

Sorry if this reply is a bit harsh, but I feel it needs to be said. My reply to this question is always "why is it important what I wear under the kilt?" and will say no more about it. I feel that this question continues to be asked because some kilties like to "keep the mystery alive" by giving silly replies. Either I wear something under the kilt or I don't.. it's no one's business but mine, and that's exactly what the public should hear.

Jamie,
Only under a Pink Kilt. Now where would I find such a kilt....hmmmm
Also, does the Flame Haired Goddess know?
And to think this would really have changed the mood of the fight scene from Braveheart when all the Scotsmen in the front did a lift and taunt to the English. They would have gotten cat calls.
Back on topic, I stick with the "it's none of your business" and leave it at that.

My best response, "I would never ask you that question."
Best to have a universal one ready, they're not going away.

Life is seldom ideal.
With Kilts there comes "The Question".
Is it appropriate to ask someone?
No.
Is it rude?
Obviously.
But it is part of wearing a kilt.
The odd thing about humor is that it is often rude and inappropriate.
Sooner or later we all get "The Question".* How you deal with it says much about who you are and the world you want to live in.
Perhaps it is just me but I would rather add a small measure of mirth to this world than offense. If the question is offered in good humor then I will provide a reasonably obscure answer. My favorite is
"There is so little mystery left in this world, I'd prefer to maintain this one"
I have had so many pleasant interactions over the last year that I would not have had if I hadn't been wearing a kilt. If the price for all these good interactions is being asked "The Question" every now and again, then it is a small price to pay. For those unsatisfied with my answer and who pursue further they will find that their rudeness goes unrewarded. I will ignore them. But I will remain a gentlemen and leave with my dignity intact. I will not be rude.
Just my personal take on this.

Reason: Thought about removing the joke about Grant, but didn't.

I never get upset with people on this one.
I usually say something like "ah...that will just have to remain a mystery", and let it go.
They don't mean to be offensive I don't think. They're just curious because of all the stories and they speak before thinking.
I think if we fire back something in anger we're doing a lot more harm than necessary.
Or try this....just smile and wag your finger
It don't mean a thing, if you aint got that swing!!
