Firstly check out this excellent thread.
Secondly make sure you actually need to hem it. My first kilt was a an SWK with a 24" length. After discussing on this forum, if i wear this traditional styled kilt at the traditional height (2" above the navel) the length fell to mid knee. No alteration needed and the kilt looks super.
