Grant, the point we NCC-1701 types are trying to make is that it's not the technology that matters, it's the people behind it. Or the Kirk.
Kallen, I admit that the Klingon Empire is strong. But look at how many time Kirk beat the Klingons. Okay, so the Organians interveined in "Errand of Mercy", and we'll never know who would have won, but, as the man said, "It would have been glorious!"
Another thing in Kirk's favor, to add to Jamie's excellent list, is that if your ship, base, planet, space station, or car dashboard has a computer, Kirk can talk it to death. In one way or another, "What Are Little Girls Made Of?", "The Return of the Archons," "The Changeling," "I, Mudd," and "The Ultimate Computer," not to mention all the times he talked a higher life form to either death or departure (for instance, "Who Mourns for Adonais?", "Day of the Dove.")
One thing you may have over looked is that Kirk cheated when he went through the kobishi(sp?) maru. BTW that is a great book.

If we are going on the people over technology principle, I would have to favor SG-1. They take on far more advanced enemies (priors would give jedi a run for their money) and have nothing more than today's technology and whatever they can find or reverse engineer. I'll take the SGC over starfleet, the empire, and just about anyone else in a firefight.
The vorlons are definitely a force to be reckoned with, but Anubis' ancient ship seems like a good match for a vorlon planet killer.
I think the Jedi would make short work of shadow vessels, with they're vulnerability to psychic interference.
And I'd like to see the death star try to take out the great machine from Babylon 5.
The replicators vs the borg would be an odd fight. I imagine they would just go about assimilating each other for eternity.
Now to ratchet the nerd levels up even higher, I'd like to toss in the halo universe. In terms of sheer destructive power, it's hard to top the halos, which can wipe out all life in the galaxy. And in ground combat, the Masterchief is a walking tank (with shields) and a master of all forms of combat, from sniping to swordplay.
Of course, the problem with most sci-fi is that the result of the fight is always determined by the writer, and the mechanics are usually filled in later. So if the guy writing the scenario wants the enterprise to win, he can just have them reconfigure the deflector array to send a tachyon pulse to disable the enemy's reactor core. As a result, it's hard to say how a lot of fights would play out because the rules governing the fights are rarely simple or consistent.

This is a fun thread. I'd actually like to get a composite of a couple of the ships mentioned with something from the World-as-myth series from Heinlein. Let's say the body of a Bird of Prey, that planet destroying cannon mentioned upthread, and the Burroughs continua device as motive power. Think about it. Pop! there it is in front of you, it fires that big cannon, pop! it's gone and you're toast. Oh, your sheilds held. No matter, Pop! it's now behind you and firing again, disappearing as soon as it has. You've no chance to shoot back, as it doesn't even stay in the same universe after it fires.
Talk about invincible.

The mention of how many times Kirk has handed the Klingons their @$$@$ just makes me think how appropriate it would be if the next Trek franchise featured a Klingon version of Homer Simpson. K'd'oh!
It was, let's admit, hard to think of Christopher LLoyd as a Klingon in Search For Spock without having the Reverend Jim from Taxi in the back of your mind. For that matter, let's get Danny DeVito in there as a Starfleet Admiral.
Anyway, I'm enjoying this discourse...many of you have obviously spent a whole lot more time reading a whole lot more Sci-Fi than I have and it's great to read your opinions.

In an interview, Leonard Nimoy mentioned how there was concern about Lloyd as the main villan, could he do it and convince audiences? He's a brilliant actor, and I think his portrayal is great, it's always nice to see actors do somthing different. Obviously, in the end they decided he could do it.
I think they need to do a new version of "The Trouble With Tribbles" and have Danny DeVito as Cyrano Jones, Ronny Cox as the insufferable Commissioner, and Richard Dean Anderson as my dear Captain Koloth.

And the winner is.....
Much as I would like to see a ship moved by a Borroughs Continnua device with Zeb at the helm, Jake on the verniers, Hilda in command advised by Lazarus, the Enterprise still has the edge. The indomitable Kirk in command supported by the intelect of Spock, augmented with a chief enginneer Scotty who could build a complete warp drive engine from an empty beer can, 2 sticks of gum, and 3 used staples. Beat that!

Richard dean Anderson as Koloth...great idea. I'm still trying to absorb the idea that "Sylar" (Zachary Quinto) is going to be "Spock" in the next ST flick.

there are obviously a lot of better cooler ships than Kirk's Enterprise, but i'm going to put my vote in for the Enterprise as well. I think a perfect addition to their superior crew though would be MacGuyver.
