Wulf first off
from Toronto, Ontario, Canada. How much you want to spend and how traditional you want to go will be two questions to ponder, as there are many different options available today. Material is another consideration, I would assume you are looking for a wool kilt, as you are talking about a traditional kilt I would also assume you mean a hand sewn kilt. So the next consideration is yardage, are you looking for an 8 yard knife pleated kilt or perhaps a 4 yard box pleat? I would hazard to guess that you would be thinking about an 8 yard knife pleat, however 4 yard box pleated kilts may be even more traditional.
In short there are quite a few factors involved in making an informed first kilt purchase, let me say you are in the right place to learn about it before diving in.

McMurdo, Since Wulf's profile indicates an interest in reenactment, I think he might be talking about a "great kilt," not a modern knife pleated one, hence the reference to a "traditional one" with a "wide belt." (Of course I could be wrong.)
Wulf, you might want to check out the offerings at Celtic Croft, to see the different styles of kilts.
Best regards,
Jake
