I thought I would throw my $0.02 USD in. I have been doing website design/maintenance for about 10 years now. I refrain from using flash animation, realplayer bits and other such bandwidth hogging extras because they are not necessary to have a good website..
There are still a lot of people on dial-up that will go to some other website instead of waiting 15 minutes for an animation to load. That means lost customers to the site owner.
I stick with HTML 4.01 compliant html only. A lot can be done without flash and other bandwidth hoggers. Even on broadband, I won't wait for a animated splash screen to load. I just go somewhere else.
BTW, http://omnis.com has been reliable for me. I have had only one outage for a few hours in the past 2 years. Their prices are cheap, too.

These are just my opinions. Your mileage may vary.
