I used to spend a lot of weekends at my uncles farm, and my cousins used to live on a farm, non of us where perticularly precious with clothes... My parents got the jacket back, 5th hand now, but have kept it for when they have grand kids, because its still it good condition.
I;ve not had any barbour socks that tall, but I doubt they'd be much differant from the boot socks I have, and I've never bought cheeps socks since. Before hand, I could wear socks two or three times, then they'd start to go thin and get holed. Now I'll not by any socks that I'm not certain will last for five years!
As many around here know, I wear shooting hose from another company in Northumberland: The Almost Unwearoutable Sock Company:

Some of the best kilt hose I have ever owned, and they do live up to their name.
This thread reminds me; it's time to re-wax the jacket.
