You're right. I went straight to the semi-trads first, since I assumed that the casual wouldn't come in the range of tartans it apparently does. 
Let's not forget that the Amerikilt is available for about $100, and comes with its own sporran-style pouch. A Utilikilt should also be available in that price range, and needs NO accessories.

I hear ya. However, as you've probably seen, USAK will make either model from their list of tartans in PV.
