Since I mostly wear UK's, I can say when people comment, they recognize that I'm wearing a kilt, and that the negative comments have been few and far between. I was out in a busy shopping district in the suburbs this weekend, and one guy on the street actually said "sweet Utilikilt," another just said "nice kilt." It is a pretty sophisticated community though, so your mileage may vary.
Best regards,
Jake

Regarding eternal damnation and kilts...
I'll take my chances on the kilt and spend a lot more time worrying about how I treat other people and what I'm doing to make the world a better place.

Gee, Thunderbolt, does this mean you were faintly annoyed????
I guess,Christ, Moses, the prophets, Apostles, and St. George & buddies to mention a tiny few should've worn pants (even if not invented yet).
I wonder if Jerry at Stillwater can find a nice Asbestos Thrifty Kilt in my size?
Don'tcha just love judgemental ignoramuses? (or is it 'ignorami?)
What a hoot! :butt:

This past summer, I was standing on a subway platform in the heart of Harlem, wearking a UK. A black family (middle-aged couple with an older lady) recognized it and I could hear them commenting how well-tailored it looked and very masculine. The husband later approached me and asked about getting one! Maybe another kiltie?
So my answer would be that I get the same response to both.

Ha! Ya'll are killing me...
The problem is with ignorant people, is that they are, well, ignorant. You see, to be uneducated about something is 'ignorant'. I have on many occasions been ignorant about something. When I recognize that I am, I do one of two things. I either (1), choose to learn more about the subject, therefore becoming "un-ignorant", or (2), accept what it is at face value and move on with my life because I just don't care, knowing that even if I did want to learn more, I would probably be worse off because of it.
The problem I have is with what I'll call the ignorant-ignorant. These are the people who are so ignorant, they don't even recognize they are. The ones who open their mouths and spout out their wide-open yaps, usually revealing the current item being masticated and rotting teeth in the process, something that a half-cognizant dunce wouldn't dream of saying. Is that stereotyping? Probably.
Just precisely what ChromeScholar went through in his experience in the "Absolutely bizarre!" thread.
Oh well. I guess I'll just continue to avoid the wal-marts and other ignorant magnets.
Ignormagnets? HA!

Huh, I just noticed something.
ChromeScholar and myself are both in Arizona. I wonder if there is something to that?

Drop the "i" and you'll be exactly right. Even the capital "L" is correct.

A fellow once told me that there is an important difference between ignorance and iggernuts. Ignorance is just not knowing; iggernuts is adamantly refusing to learn.

I am not weird, I am proper gentleman and therefore eccentric. Weird is for kooks of lower stature who cannot afford to be eccentric. Thank you very much!

From some ignorant englishman claiming that kilts are for Scottish ONLY, and only Ulster Scots at that, to some bible-thumping idiot quoting the old testament claiming that anyone (male) wearing the kilt is going to hell, because dressing like a women is a sin!
Why is it that as soon as someone does (wears) something just a bit off center according to their idea of "normal", the person is branded as "weird"?
Why must people be this ignorant?? We are constantly bombarded with the mantra of being a tolerant society and accepting people for who they are, yet when these very same people are confronted with something outside there perception of reality, they are the first to finger-point and ridicule!
Yes, I wear a kilt.
No, I'm not strange or wierd.
No, I'm not gay.
No, there isn't a special occasion.
My wife loves it, as a matter of fact.
Yes, I DO play the bagpipes, but that's not why I wear a kilt.
Yes, I wear it almost every day.
Yes, it is cool, doood.
No, there isn't some type of Scottish holiday today.

I should just clarify something. I, frankly, don't give a rats a$$ what other people think. Most of the time I ignore most things said anyway. (My bad ears help me ignore everything else) I just wish people would stop and think just one second before opening their trap.

You do some crazy surfing. I have never come across anything that extream. I have seen some sites (usually you can tell they base all info from braveheart) and they think only Scot's can wear the kilt and they seem to think that Scotland today still hates and wars with england. Great to assume that a Hollywood retelling of a story in the 1400's somehow means things are still just like that today.
I still have yet to see or meet a religious site or person to tell me kilts are bad. I have heard and read about how men should not dress like women and women to look like men. But I have yet to meet a church goer let alone a pastor that did not know what a kilt was and know it is a mans garment. If you are surfing for kilt info and come across a site about religion then may be best to pass on that. As a Christian myself I would not see a need to have a religious exposition on a kilt unless it was on some heritage of a name.
We need to get you surfing better spots. In all reality there is only so much info out there on Kilts. I think if I wanted to surf for hours solid about kilts I be re-reading a lot of info I had already read. I do like to looks at places every few months to see what new items they have but yeah all the history on the Modern version of the kilt that is popular now has been written for the most part.
