I think they ask that question, because they are cold, and can't believe that we aren't....

Exactly. Last winter when out on our few SOKS nights (and only one kilt) I'd be outside the bar grabbing a smoke in kilt and sweater (-20C) and the trousered other smokers ask me the same question and I'm the one not shivering.

Maybe they feel more compassion for us?

They wouldn't ask then because they were dressed the same, so they already had the answer. With a kiltie they see naked knees and nothing preventing a cold Nor' easter blowing up add to that, their perception of the 'answer' to THE 'question' in their mind's eye. I would ask the same question two years ago (B.K.) had I seen one.
