    Damp rid is calcium chloride (the non-rock salt version of sidewalk de-icers). It's a desiccant like Silica gel, but it also turns into a brine and then releases a bit of moisture back into the air. It's also exothermic, meaning it heats up as it gets wet. It wouldn't be a good thing for close contact with electronics.

    Ah! Thank you for giving me the chemical description of that product. I am quite familiar with CaCl. I work with it very often in a flake and pellet form and in different strengths. No way I'm using that around my iPod.
