    Good luck.

That's my plan. The fabric is supposed to arrive today.

Bearded: 32 years. Kilted: 225 days, more or less. They do seem to go together, just observe the photos of gents in belted plaids!

Given the oft-seen ethnic trait of brown hair and red beards, it's just too bad that I did not take up the kilt when my beard was still red. However, the kilt also goes great with grey.

I've had the beard since the last job which prohibited beards --- the job involved a char-broiler and occasional grease flare-ups, and the boss-lady did not like the smell of burnt hair in the restaurant, for some reason. So, you could say that my wife has never seen my face. The only clean-shaven pictures she's seen were from about age 18. Once upon a time, perhaps 20 years ago, she expressed some mild curiosity.

So before Hallowe'en of 2006, I came up with the idea of shaving as my "costume"... just a one-shot, have the beard back before Christmas sort of thing. She vetoed it absolutely, so I guess she's used to me... or was afraid that I'd have fat cheeks.

To me, the Van Dyke/van Dyck is the combination of a moustache and goatee which "connect" around the mouth. I believe that's the old 20th-century usage. The point just depends on how you trim it. So yes, that's the cartoon villain type of beard.

In my mind, the goatee is a separate item from the moustache; but without the 'stache, it has several alternate names?

Veering slightly off topic but the can of worms has been opened and the history buffs will be descending anyway...

I always assumed that the style of beard got its name from the beard of the artist.

I don't have the goatee anymore. But, you just described me to the "t."

<chortle> yes it did. I was also refreshing my memory & saw that van Dyck himself had the merest of chin-whiskers and a twirly moustache; at least in the most familiar portraits.

However I believe the term arose in the U.S. in the 20th century and in that context has the general meaning of moustache plus goatee. Webster's 3rd does indeed specify a pointed beard.

Goatee - beard on the chin only, traditionally but not always trimmed to a point.

Van Dyke - A chin beard and mustache, which may or may not connect. As with the goatee the chin beard is often shaped to a point.

I just realized my full beard is only five weeks old. It's nice and thick now, and in a few weeks it'll probably need it's first trimming.
I like the full beard but I'll be going back to the Van Dyke come spring. It's just too hot to insulate the cheeks all summer long.

Oops, I forgot about Summer... Guess that might not work out here in the desert. Might keep the sun off my face though.

I've tried various styles of beards & goatees over the past 25 years. They usually never lasted more than a few months. However, my current goatee...errr...Van Dyke has been in place since the summer of 2003. I have no intention of ever shaving it off. The old pics of me clean shaven scare me!

I had an algebra teacher in highschool that grew a beard on even numbered decades... or something like that.
