Christopher Pike was Captain of the Enterprise before Kirk (and Captain Robert April before him).
Spock served with Captain Christopher Pike for some seven years before Kirk.
One of Kirk's first assignments was aboard the Farragut.
They need to bring the history to the screen not rewrite it.

Exactly. I watched a parody on YouTube on if George Lucas were to direct Lord of the Rings. I think the best part of it was Lucas saying, "Well, I respect Tolkien as a writer, but, well, he didn't tell The Lord of the Rings that way I would have". It then goes on to lampoon Lucas in a, dare I say it, epic fashion. I hope that Abramswill more than just respect Rodenberry as a writer.
I remember hearing that Spock may have served with Pike for 11 years, one five year mission, one year refitting Enterprise, and another 5 year mission. I don't know if that was ever canon, though.

I was going by "The Menagerie" which we just watched where he states it was seven years, some months, and this many days.
"Courtmartial" and "Obssession" had some details on young ensign kirk as I recall.
