Well, using general society as a bench mark, it is strange.

Using this rabble as your bench mark, then no, you're just getting started.

It is funny though, how you pick up so much useless information without realising it. Ok, I'm no tartan expert, but I can probably identify more tartans then I might ever need to.

But yes, I;ve looked at lots of options, but my ultimate goal is still wool, traditionaly made, in varying yardages and pleating styles to fill every need.

I think making a kilt is a wonderful thing to do!!
It is just as good a hobby as collecting things, growing things, building things etc.
I have finished kilt#4 and have material for three more.
I don't except to make a kilt for someone else.
But I get the "kilt I want" not something off the shelf..
So far none of my kilts are of any tartan, they are plads I liked. No solids yet but I do have a maroon piece of wool that may become a kilt.
It is something to do while watching the boob tube, and is a very clean hobby, except maybe a little blood when you stick yourself with a pin or needle
