Does the person sewing the kilt have to be a Scottish Citizen? What if Barb were on vacation in Scotland and picked up some cloth in Edinburgh and sewed a complete kilt in her Edinburgh hotel room at night? So, that kilt would then be a "Scottish Kilt"? But, the hundreds of others she'd previously made are different? Or what about the fact that Kathy Lare was trained to make kilts in Scotland but a Scot (by invitation at that.) Read her awards and qualifications here. Can you still say the likes of her deserve to be lumped with the crap peddlers??

And I couldn't agree more that the Whiskey/Whisky/Cheese analogies are "apples and oranges." Bourbon and Scotch are made from different ingredients. So, of course you would never call one the other or vice versa.
    Spot on.

While I certainly understand the motivation behind this campaign, I can't support it, being a free market, free trade guy. Personally, I think an education campaign would be better. Say, some posters, or advertisements in newspapers and magazines that tourists would be apt to read.

from my point of view this is free advertising for Howie and his business, it has nothing to do with the authenticity of a garment.

Just clever Howie drawing attention to himself.

What about some kind of Scotland based international Kilt makers authority that could inspect product and issue a "seal of approval" or authorized to sell" kind of status to legitimate top quality Kilt making craftsmen/women?????? Would give the kiltmakers bragging rights as well.

How does the old proverb go? "Never use a canon to swat a fly on your friend's head"

As many others have suggested, I think simply requiring a country of manufacture material label would get the job done.

While they are at it, they could probably regulate some of the more meaningless and deceptive terms, such as authentic, traditional, and the always hilarious "acrylic wool"

Someone said earlier that a lot of people don't know the difference and will think "why pay so much more for the same thing?" I know there are a lot of stupid people out there, but I think most people have learned that you get what you pay for. Anyone silly enough to believe that a kilt being sold for 1/10 of the price is going to be of the same quality will probably get swindled anyway.

On the other hand, the price to quality relationship doesn't necessarily apply in the fashion industry...

Edit: And I'm all for a kiltmaker's seal of approval, but I don't think it would make a difference, as most of the people who are buying gold brothers kilts would never see it.

I agree with your opening volley, I have to double check that I read it right too (and I usually type it wrong so I stick to "K" (though I do know how to swear in welsh now ..).
I doubt that this will do any good as well, people will still call them whatever suits their vocabulary, retailers will still call them "scottish" wether or not they really are, most people in general won't know or care let alone even hear about this IF it were to pass.
Seems a lot to do about not much.

Something like that DOES already exist (of which Kathy Lare is a member.) Because of this she is authorized to place the guild's label in her kilts. Nobody pays much attentionl to this now. So, I doubt it would make much difference elsewhere.
