SWK kilts are inexpensive, but they are not durable enough to withstand hard wear for long. They are made of acrylic and have a loose weave, so they will snag easily and start pilling after about 6 washings.

For a tartan battle kilt, you would be better off getting a polyviscose Casual kilt from USA Kilts or a poly-cotton Sportkilt. The USAK Casual is a much nicer kilt than the Sportkilt. Both are machine washable.

I don't recommend wearing a kilt pin in the field. It is going to snag on things which will probably result in a torn kilt and a lost kilt pin.

For battle, I would go with a fanny pack instead of a sporran. A sporran is going to flop around and get in the way.

A traditional kilt belt and buckle (waistplate) is intended for semi-formal wear and is probably going to get scatched and beat up quickly. I think a 2-inch-wide leather belt with a standard buckle like the one sold at Amerikilt would be a good choice.

What folks are failing to mention is that the USA Kilts Casuals, and Semi-traditionals, are TEFLON coated. Seems the wisest choice for paintball and long wear with repeat washings.

Its probably very important that you lay your eyeballs on the various cheap kilt options, and USA Kilts Teflon coated, before purchase - if at all possible.

I'm guessing your most important requirement would be the ability to get the paint washed out. The second would be for the kilt to survive, and even be functional, in the field. Seems like the inexpensive kilts would fall short on those counts.

Donnie, billmcc, & Riverkilt:

Thank you for your advise. I contacted Sport Kilt and USA Kilt today. They are going to send me some swatches of durable material for comparison. Both were very friendly. I also have a sample on the way from Celtic Croft. I sent an e-mail to Celtic Croft requesting one. I plan to send an e-mail to a few others as well.

Our team will be sitting down to compare and discuss when the swatches arrive. So far the durability and price tend to favor USA Kilt for the battle kilts, but I am keeping an open mind.
