That winter (1911-1912) holds the record for greatest recorded snowfall for the season in Iowa, since records have been kept. It was very cold, for a long time, and very snowy, all across the land.
We are currently in the number 9 position for all time snowfall records. A few more inches, and we could make the top five. It would only take another 10" snow to make the top of the list. Everyone is TIRED of winter.
I know why people live in southern California, but I still couldn't do it, even when winter here sucks this bad. Too many people, way too close together for my comfort level. I'd rather have to bundle up. And besides, as Grant has noted, spring is a wondrous awakening after a winter like this.
The biggest problem around here are the unpaved roads like what I live on. We had a thaw last weekend, all the rivers are full and more, and the gravel roads all have mudholes and ruts, and it looks like everyone who lives out here has been off-road four wheeling, ALL the time. Not far from the truth, either.
Spring WILL come, and St. Patrick's day is still a way off. Be happy. At least it's not below zero F any more.
