I'd strongly echo the sentiments above that you should visit a kiltmaker in person and let them measure you. See the tartan swatches in daylight, and support local kiltmaker businesses.
I know of two main kilt shops in Aberdeen itself:
- Alex Scott as others above have mentioned (corner of Back Wynd and Schoolhill)
- McCalls Highland Wear at 11 Bridge Street (highland wear dept on the top floor)
I visited both before settling on Scotts for my first kilt. Scott's kilt dept is on an upper floor. Work your way though the shop and up all the stairs at the front, then up the stairs at the back (the route up is signed). Their head kiltmaker is called Margot Brodie - meet her if you can and above all, enjoy the experience of acquiring your first kilt.
