Those were my exact same thoughts as well for wanting to get one for my husband. He's been losing weight and kept holding off on buying a kilt because he was afraid it wouldn't fit. I told him he'd be missing out on the fun NOW until the day came where he was finished losing weight. His standard is a bit loose on him, but we felt the slightly bigger size would be better than risking a slightly-too-small size now. As far as the pleats, I admit I wanted the chance to see if I could sew those down. He held off on getting one though (d'oh!).
