I wish my church was celebrating the liturgy that day, but since we're not, and since our priest, who is of Irish ancestry, has given us permission to break the Lenten fast for St. Patrick's, I'll be wearing my Irish Rugby track jacket and green braces, and I'll be heading out to a bar where my brother's band is playing.

Now, the only decision I have to make is... Guinness or Irish whiskey? Or perhaps Car Bombs?

One thing is certain... NO GREEN BEER

Gratefully, the only places in Memphis you can order green beer, are the beer joints that have a very limited selection. They don't even qualify as pubs.

The pubs that hire us to perform openly promote their sales of Guinness, Harp, Murphy's, Smithwick's, etc and have plenty of patrons. Pub owners have told me multiple times that green beer stains wooden floors and is difficult to remove.

Besides, only certified numpties wanna drink Bud Lite containing FD&C Green No. 3. Bleecchh!

    Slainte yall,
    steve

Right there you hit on the biggest problem with green beer: Only the nasty ones get dyed. The good beer (stout, lager, etc.) doesn't need a gimmick.

I will definately be going out this weekend in my saffron kilt and knocking back a few Guinness (Guinnesses, Guinness', Guinni, whatever). I'm not a big fan of trendy drinks but an Irish Car Bomb or two might go down well since I haven't abused my liver in well over a year and I don't have to drive. There's a place up here with an all you can eat corned beef and cabbage buffet that I am most certainly not going to miss.
