In Australia, a "shephard's pie" is typically a circular pie crust, with a filling made from beef mince, peas, and carrots. The 'lid' is made from whipped / mashed potatoes which is spread across the top of the filling before being baked in the oven. My mother would run a fork across the top of the potato to give the top a little texture, which would make the potato a little crunchy (the butter in the whipped potato didn't hurt that effect either).

Occasionally, mum would add a little grated cheese on top.

Served hot, with lashings of ketchup (or tomato sauce as we Aussies refer to it) - YUM!
