I am having trouble finding an exact match on the color of brown for one of my brown sporrans to get a belt. It might be that I will have to do something like this...

Mink Oil first, and then pure neatsfoot oil not compound will darken cowhide slowly so you can stop in time. They don't work well on artificial leather because it's not sufficiently porous. Neatsfoot oil compound works badly because its low viscosity lets the leather absorb too much too fast, making it soggy.
