Mink Oil first, and then pure neatsfoot oil not compound will darken cowhide slowly so you can stop in time. They don't work well on artificial leather because it's not sufficiently porous. Neatsfoot oil compound works badly because its low viscosity lets the leather absorb too much too fast, making it soggy.
