Please do not take this as a slight in any way against Berserk's talent and abilities, but I think you may surprise yourself. I was always afraid of sewing, until I actually started doing it. Ditto with leather work.
I would definitely not call myself talented, and I definitely think our young friend did a very nice job, but at the same time, I'm not going to let the fact that someone else can do it better, keep me from trying, and IMHO, neither should you. (That's meant as encouragement, not a scolding ...)
Now I guess I gotta make that full-mask gator sporran for wearing here in Florida ...

What he said. You never know what you can do till you try. The only thing about leatherwork is that if you really want to get into it it can be quite pricey. Starting out you would at least need a good pair of shears, an awl, some good needles, rotary hole punch. . . the list goes on and on. By the time that you have acquired the tools necessary to make a sporran you could have bought one. The real profit comes from making multiple items and either keeping them for yourself and enjoying the savings, or trying to sell a few to offset your costs. I dont want to discourage anyone from learning leathercraft, I am just relaying my experiences cost-wise.

For SOME people sewing and leatherwork is much easier than for others.
I think you did a great job and one that I don't think I have the ability to duplicate.

Thanks, and I can defiently understand what you mean. Leatherwork is not for everyone or there wouldnt be any leatherworkers in business. I can to lots of things but there are as many things I'm not good at and those things are not worth me investing the money in. There is a reason I dont make traditional kilts. . .

After a while of mastering the needle in leather, the needle in wool will come to you. Be patient, the sewing machine took a day or two to get going.. getting the needle to hide the stitches in a kilt can happen someday.. I know, I am in my fourth week of hand sewing a wool kilt, and am no wheres near a third of the way. My eyesight gives out after only one pleat....

Well, as of right now my DIY passion lies with sporrans and other leather goodies. I have no desire to sew a kilt. If I do, I will probably start with an x-kilt and go from there. The sewing machine is still something a little foreign to me. I just want to get good enough to sew patches onto uniforms for my service.
