This is indeed a tough one. I was in the same situation (laid off) about 4 years ago at age 48. After not finding corporate work after several months I took the CBEST (here in California, this test allows those with BA/BS degrees to work as Substitute Teachers). I quickly remembered why I originally wanted to teach.
So, back to school and a year as a High School Math Teacher (long term substitute), Just finished my first full year teaching High School Science (and acquired my Teaching Credential in Biology and Earth Science).
It's great to be able to touch a life! However, as noted earlier in the thread, teaching is not for everyone.
Goos luck, I know that the right career is out there for you. Take some time and evaluate what is important to you and what you really want to do.
