The eyelets on collar dogs are meant to pass through tiny circular "button holes" on the collar of the jacket/tunic. Poking holes in the collar is not to be encouraged-- there are as many as four layers of fabric in the collar. I'd suggest you track down some embroidered thistle emblems and stitch them to the collar instead.

Scottish weed?I rather suspect that you are looking at a Scottish thistle!It sounds as though you have the standard British army method of attaching collar dogs,pips,cap badges(the fittings for these have changed now,I think) ,etc..Be careful the eyes have a habit of breaking off.

You pretty much got it right, most british mil badges are the same too (the current RRS badge has 7 of these posts to cut into your headdress). For Rank Badges most have been replaced by pins abd studs now which are kinder to the material but less robust. Suggest you use a craft knife rather than an awl.

I'm reconsidering these dogs.

Er, my tunic has no such button holes in the collar. This tells me alot. I think you saved me some trouble.

Burnett's & Struth. I've actually had it for a while, but it's conducive only to wearing during the colder months, unless someone can assure me the air conditioning will be jacked up. I actually prefer this patrol tunic to the doublet and plaid. Although I bought this over the phone and email, it fits like a glove. B&S know how to do it!

you can see on this photo the button holes have been punched and stitched for Captain's rank. this is actually very rare to see this now.



On the underside you can see the holes again.

Conveniently my Major's crowns have the posts top and bottom so new holes need cut, as I mentioned before I did this with a craft knife. you should be able to see the bar fed through the eylets in this.

I was normal for a Field Officer to get the epaulettes on his uniform replaced on promotion. New Rank badges have pins and studs that don't require holes to be cut.

Have you considered having a jeweler cut the posts off and silver soldering clutch back pins in their place?

Patrol jackets have (or at least they did when I wore one) standing collars-- clutch back pins just won't work as they'd dig into your neck something ferocious!
