I'm toying with the idea of heading to Chicago for the event in September. Can anyone say whether it'd be worth the visit, or, at least, worth it as a springboard to a trip to Chicago?

I haven't been there since 1972, figure there might be a few changes.

Even though I live here, I can see Chicago as a good destination when I compare it to the five or six other cities that I gladly visit again at the drop of a hat. Since we're sucking up to get the Olympics, it's even better...most people are on their good behaviour and it's Bread And Circuses everywhere.

It ain't Grandfather Mountain, but how often do you get to see caber tossing in the middle of a huge canyon of skyscrapers? It's very surreal, I assure you. It's a general good time but I would hope that you'd get a few other activities in as just coming for this event might be a bit of a letdown. Anybody interested, PM me and I'll give you the "good, cheap hotels downtown" list...but I'd seriously think about booking ahead if you're going to take advantage of them. One of the BIG secrets about Chicago Celtic Fest is the Friday evening event...the musical preview at the Cultural Center in Preston Bradley Hall (which is, itself, worth seeing let alone hearing some tuneage in...it's all done in beautiful mosaics...lots of gold). We got to last years and it was stellar. Lots of "spontaneous" Irish dancing during the sets...yeah, right...spontaneous...sure.

It is a hoot, though. Hoping that Canadian Tourism extends my wife another invite to one of their events this year...last years was superb and I met some of the nicest people ever.

And since that's the official one that gets handed out at work, that is the one to go by.
The aforementioned passport cards are supposed to be available next month, if I remember the last set of "talking points" that they gave us, and at $45, they're half the price of a passport.
