She didn't match the pattern when she cut / sewed her skirt that's why!!
It can actually be very difficult to match tartans at the side seams of skirts unless the tartan is symmetrical in all directions. Also, the tartan pictured seemed to have a very wide sett, which means if she wanted (and could) match the stripes at the side seams, a great deal of fabric would have been needed.
Most sew-ers will ignore matching plaids/tartans at every seam, sometimes it just can't be done.

From the little I saw of the MacDonald wedding photo earlier in the thread (in which they were snoggin'), I think the pattern below was used by his new mother-in-law. I recognised it as I just made the bolero jacket for my 12yr old daughter who, btw, was disappointed I didn't make her the entire dress (not enough fabric). The pattern is now discontinued, but still available from Simplicity.

Most patterns can be used for tartan. I skip right past the photos and hone in on the line drawings. Print them off, grab a couple of coloured pencils and draw in a tartan. Maybe you only want a tartan collar, or cuffs? A few pen strokes will tell you if it's too much or not enough. The first pattern I posted would be fantastic with the sash part done in tartan.
Also, a very reasonable priced corset company: www.timeless-trends.com

Not the best quality scan but this is from today's paper. It's an ad for Prime Outlets shopping plaza. I may have to drive over to browse...

corsets
Ok, I have seen several of you ladies wearing corsets in postings or talking about them. I have thought about this for years and I am thinking of taking the plunge and getting one. Where do you suggest I go looking?
Any suggestions as to the best way to do this?
Thanks!
Julie

I actually made mine from a pattern (Laughing Moon, although next time I might try the Truly Victorian pattern) to make sure it fit me just right. It really wasn't that hard, I just made sure I made a mock-up first before I cut into my final fabric and got the boning sized the way I needed it. Otherwise, I'm not sure who to recommend, especially if you want a custom-fitted one. Good luck!

The have one price for all their corsets ($99). They are made with steel busks, and spiral steel boning. Very good workmanship.
Otherwise, try:
http://www.farthingales.on.ca/
This company was spun off the costume dept of the Stratford Festival in Stratford, Ontario. Very helpful and love to help. I've used the spiral steel boning that they carry in the highland dance vests I've made. Much, MUCH, better than the plastic crap you get at fabric stores.

There's a lot to take into account when buying a corset. is it purely for looks or do you want to get into tight-lacing? Is your bust/waist/hip ratio strictly average or do you have a very defined figure?
I used to work as a fitter for a corsetier when I was a teenager so I got to see them getting made for almost every use.
If you are looking to get into tight-lacing and your build is fairly neutral you can find very, very good quality corsets from the maker Vollers on ebay for a reasonable price.
However, if you just want to experiment with the look then I would also suggest timeless-trends.com
Good luck in finding one you really like.

I'm pretty sure it was indeed a Simplicity pattern she used, though I have no idea which one. It looked fantastic, though. Your daughter has taste!
