Sturdy Chain Belts

I'm looking for a sturdy sporran chain belt. Instead of "wanted" though, I thought I'd make a discussion. Who's bought what, and what's lasted.

My SWK chain belts have all but worn out. They're inexpensive, but they just don't seem to hold up over the ages.

My SportKilt chain served me for only a couple of weeks before the leather middle piece that the sporran itself hangs from tore in half. I've repaired it today with super glue, but it made a pretty good case for a switch to a leather strap or sporran hangers.

Sporran strap is sort of an option, but I still need a chain to be in uniform for the pipe band. Plus, I prefer the look of the chain belt.

All I know is that I have read several suggestions to replace the chain part with the chain of a dog collar because it is polished and smoothed very well so as to not to hurt the dog over time. I've even read that it may be better than the leather belt for the kilt because of this polishing and smoothing. I have know idea, just what I read.

Switch from chain to leather. It's much more appropriate for day wear and it doesn't hurt the kilt like the chain will. SWK sells them cheap, and I can attest to their quality

The buzz kidder sporrans come with a nice chain but it is literally just a chain with a couple of key chain clips on the ends, no leather or buckle at all. Mine came with probably 4 feet of chain.

Hey, George, can you use this? This is what cavscout is talking about. It was sent to me with a recent Buzz Kidder purchase and I don't use chains so it's collecting dust. It's 43 inches from clip end to clip end. If you can use it I'll ship it to you. PM me if interested.

Hah, especially for those, like me, who talk too much to begin with

I don't use chains much because I don't really like the way they look on me. I have found that taking a leather sporran strap and adding trigger snap closures is really easy, Tandy leather stores have the rivets and trigger snaps cheap. I converted two leather straps this way and I love them. It makes switching sporrans, or taking them off, so much easier. But, I don't think they're used much in a pipe band.

I'm getting ready to replace a cheap chain with the dog chains. Only problem was that they were not long enough to do the job, so I had to buy 2 and now I trying to figure out the best way of joining them so it looks good. When I get it done, I'll post a picture.
