How does the great Norm say it again? Oh, yes...
"And remember this: there is no more important safety rule than to wear these — safety glasses."
I have about six or seven pair in various places throughout the shop so there is always one available.

Wearing safety glasses really doesn't hit home until you or someone you know has an eye accident. My brother had a splinter enter his eye. He was chopping wood. His depth perception now sucks but darn him, he can still beat me at golf. He does have some sight capability in his injured eye.

I had an uncle who as a kid had an eye lost to an arrow. (He became a carny, which was amusing really. Seems an interesting life to me, but my family said that was one job that I was not allowed to look into. Something about getting an education)

Glad to hear that you and your eye are OK. In addition to safety glasses (prescription) I also wear a full face shield when turning wood. I have had a couple destroyed over the years when the wood fractured and flew out of the lathe! Better the face shield than my face .

After my lasix surgery, I went out and bought several pairs of safety glasses. When I go somewhere that requires them, I dislike wearing the pair they gave me. I now work in an atmosphere where they are required at all times. Saafety is good. I hope your eye heals fast and well.

Och, now Frank...
I do have to point out, if PiobBear had been using a rat-tail rasp, a carving chisel, or a card scraper (not really sure what he was doing with the dremel - shaping a small object or working on a carving? Smoothing something, maybe?) then he wouldn't have had a sanding drum fly off to hit him in the eye in the first place!

Ouch! Glad it wasn't as bad as it could have been.
I made a similar mistake with my dremmel. I was using one of the wire brush tools and a little sliver of the wire came flying out and stuck into my eyeball.
I had to stand at the mirror with tweezers and pull it out.
Saline solution helped clean it until it healed, but I always wear glasses when working, now.
Hope you feel better soon!

It's all fun and games until someone loses an eye.
Or as they say in politics, an Aye!
