I've always thought a flat cap (by whatever name you call it) looks good with a kilt for casual attire, especially in tweed.
I don't subscribe to the logic that a peaked hat does not look appropriate with Highland dress, as the Highland bonnet of old was often worn pulled forward to create just such a peak.
