A good source for kilt etiquette

I was just wondering if there is a good source for researching, what to wear when while in a kilt. What consitutes formal semi formal etc wear.

Being fairly new to wearing my clans tartan, I want to wear it properly and be in the proper attire when attending a function.

Any help will be apprecriated.

The kilt "bible" is J. Charles Thopmsons' book, called 'So You're Going To Wear The Kilt'.

Read that first. Then ask away whatever questions you may have.

There is no problem of asking your questions here. Although what you'll get are opinions.

Of course we know opinions are like armpits...we all have one or two and they usually stink...

That's not to say that the information here isn't any good, just that you'd probably be confused over simple matters.

the Thompson book is fine, but very traditional and in many way prescriptive, it is used in the States a lot and considered very important to them.
For a more modern, and I'd say more realistice perspective,on how kilts are worn (as well as all the traditional ideas) try Nick Fiddes book http://www.scotweb.co.uk/kiltsandtartan/
It is a much fresher and mentions different sorts of kilts and is a thoroughly good read as well, with lots of up to date pictures.
There are lots of ways of wearing the kilt, have a read through them , and then decide yourself how you feel in the kilt. There are lots of different views here, and some are expressed very candidly.

Apart from making sure the pleats are at the back the most important thing is length. Anything below the middle of the kneecap looks wrong, especially if there is no gap between the kilt and the top of your hose when it becomes really sad looking.

I agree there Phil and if I may add, you don't have to wear all the "bells and whistles" either.In fact, keep your dress as simple as you can, in Highland attire terms, "less" is most definitely more pleasing to the eye.
