Last night was parent-teacher conferences for the school I work at. It is the first one I have had since beginning to wear my kilt on a regular basis. Most of my students, as you could imagine, have told their parents about the Spanish teacher that wears a kilt. I had several parents make some very positive comments about it. In fact, I had one that thinks I should wear it more often than I do. I did have one parent that seemed to not agree. He looked at me and asked me why a Spanish teacher would wear a kilt. Without being too rude, I told him that although I teach Spanish, I am not from Latin America and that my ancestry is from Scotland. I did not say some of things I really wanted to say to him. I think that sometimes parents believe that, for example, a Spanish teacher lives, breathes, and sleeps Spanish. They don’t realize that it is just my job. I love Spanish, but I love to wear kilts as well. Anyways, it was a great time last night. I did not go kilted to the conferences. Once the parents are used to it, and I get a nice kilt jacket, I will go kilted.
