I only have to add the cd for my machine also showed the drop method for testing the bobbin tension. I didn't mean it could be the only problem but that it is a possible solution and the correct tension is important. I understand doing the other things first in case it was working earlier. In my case it was not adjusted correct from the factory so that was the solution.

4) Remove the needle and look closely at it. Look at the point, is it dull or flat. Insure the needle is straight by rolling it on the table top.
Re-insert the needle
Unfortunately, domestic sewing machines do not have round needle shanks. Domestic sewing machine needles have a flat rear shank so they don't roll. However, if you place the needle flat on the table, the shaft should be parallel to the table surface.

Given, domestic needles are more expensive than industrial needles, one tends to push the boundaries of the lifespan of the needle. I tend to change the needles frequently. I can hear if a needle is worn out as it tends to thump more than when a new one is installed.
If I might suggest getting at least one new pack (of 5) for every project. This way you can stockpile and not worry about the condition of a needle at 2:00am on a Saturday knowing that is your last and the shop won't be open till later in the week.
(I purchase needles in packages of 100 and I have 10 boxes on hand at the moment)
