Unless I am greatly mistaken, all the clans are armigerous.

Good on ya, laddie! And if anyone tries to poop in your cheerios and starts talking about how not all surnames were members of clans, and clans never wore tartans because tartans didn't come along until long after the wheels had come off the clan system, yadda yadda yadda, don't listen.

Enjoy learning about where you came from. If you're like me, this discovery will awaken a pride inside you that you didn't even know was there. Wear your tartan proudly.

An armigerous clan is one which does not have a currently recognised chief.

If your g-g grandmother was a Crawford, doesn't that make you 1/16th Crawford?

My understanding is that families that were once clans but no longer have a chief are no longer clans, but broken clans, Wikipedia notwithstanding. It is sometimes a helpful online resource, and worth every penny paid for its use.

    Hence, all clans are armigerous.

If you are a Crawford, you might want to note a young woman named Margaret Crawford. In 1297, she married a minor noble named Sir Malcolm Wallace of Ellerslie. They had five kids, I think -- a couple of boys. One of them did some stuff. He was kind of a big deal. Name escapes me, though.

One can wear a clan tartan with pride and recognise the many myths associated at the same time, you know?

    I agree.

One can also wear one's group tartan and feel proud of it as if it were one's clan tartan, too.

I recall a few threads lately comparing the Leather Neck tartan to a clan tartan. Recognizing the myths around the clan tartans, I am fine with this comparison and respect the extention of the meaning of "clan."
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…

Congrats!! I did the same thing. I kept looking and looking into my background and I finally found it. My GG Grandmother was a McKinney. They are aligned with Clan McKenzie. I therefore went out and purchased a McKenzie Kilt.
