PHOTOS of Hand-made Dirk and Sgian Dubh

Here are some pics of the Deer Antler Dirk and Sgian Dubh that I made from the rack of a deer my Grandfather shot.

    THE SGIAN DUBH:

I studied these antlers for about a week before I made the cut. Then I used a dremel to carve the handle the sgian dubh, and for the design. Then drilled the holes and inset the beads and sapphire stone gems. The top is adorned with a sapphire ring that I cut to fit. (Ignore the rust on the damascus blade, oops)

    THE DIRK:

The tang of the blade goes all the way to the top of each handle. I hand drilled each one...and FYI, *don't ever use Gorilla Glue for a project like this, haha! I was wiping off the spillage seeping out for an hour* ha) I used a Ruby gemstone for the top of the Dirk, that is set in silver (originally from a necklace).

Those are very cool excellent work, they will look great whenever you plan on using them, and look like they will fit into any situation, good for you.

Thanks McMurdo! I originally designed the sgian dubh to wear whenever I get married. Even though the handle is made of antler, the gems make it more for a dressier occasion. Coincidentally, it is the only sgian that I own right now.
    Cheers!

Nice work. I've never seen antler so thoroughly worked as on that sgian...I'm going to have to experiment with that. Don't you just love the smell of Dremeled bone???

I'll second the Gorilla glue warning. I learned my lesson with that as well!

Yes, they are beautiful. Are you planning to wear the dirk and the sgian dubh at your wedding?

Probably just the sgian dubh...huh, do you think it appropriate to wear a Dirk at the wedding???

ps~ I wanted to honor my Grandfather in memory by making both of these. I was actually able to show them to him before he died.

I guess if you are planning to cut the cake with the dirk, it might work. Not sure if it is appropriate if it has no purpose. The sgian dubh is in the sock because of tradition that you take it out of your arm pit and put it inn the sock in your freind's house. Don't think the dirk was ever hidden and therefore outlawed in some parts of the history of Scotland. In fact, I'm not sure where I would wear a dirk unless I was a piper, piping in the wedding.
