    Along the same vein-
    How about a Mess Jacket, sort of like a Prince Charlie, but without tails? Buttons with a matte finish would also be nice. Sometimes I think the tails are a bit much.

    I have wondered the same question, would a Mess Dress, with plain buttons/plain sleeves be casual or is it still "formal"?

    Mess Dress is considered Formal. Here is the Wiki article on it, though I'm sure there are better resources out there this is a good start.
