There are many events where Sir Sean wears a tartan related to his lineage, however the event he was at was Dressed to Kilt, it is Fashion Show if you google Dressed to Kilt you will see far more radical departures from traditional kilt wearing. This is as I can see it normal for the venue, and part of the fact that the event is indeed a fashion show, many designers try to push the envelope when it comes to fashion of any kind, kilts are no exception.
There are many of us on this forum, myself included, who wear the kilt on a daily basis, many of us wear more than just our clan tartan, while many wear the clan tartan only. Really the rule is there are no rules, one can wear as many tartans as one desires. If you wish to only wear your clan tartan that is up to you.
As for Mercedes Benz having their own tartan, I for one applaud them for this move, there are literally thousands of tartans, each year there are more designed, one of my favourite tartans is the Isle of Skye tartan, it is a district tartan designed and first woven in 1992, that does not make it any less a tartan than my Royal Stewart or Graham of Mentieth, just a newer one. The tartan Sir Sean is wearing is admittedly not for everyone, but then again few tartans are.

Pure conjecture on my part, but I wonder if the Mercedes tartan didn't have something to do with their relationship with Scottish Formula 1 driver David Coulthard. When he was driving for McLaren, the team used Mercedes engines. (Actually, they still do.) Just a thought....

My late father had a MBZ 300SL coupe back in the early 60s and it had tartan seats. That was about 40 years before Coulthard signed on with the Silver Star cars, so I suspect that there isn't much of a connection. But then again, who knows how the MBZ corporate mind works?

Forget applauding--this has moved up my kilted wish list!
As long as Chrysler didn't play any role in it...
