I have been deliberately keeping out of this since my last post and only have one brief observation to make on recent contributions.
The UNITED aspect is, whilst it may not be entirely belied, can be seen by modern eyes (as per English Bloke's contribution) to be at least compromised for present day aspirations. That the current Union Flag is as much political and historical as symbolic has been seen in these discussions, but symbols are powerful images and I don't think the issue is going to go away, especially when some are satisfied and some are not.
