    That's one seriously long-haired seal!

I support the ban. There's no need for seal harvest, especially the way that some of it is still being done. Whaling and sealing are unnecessary, IMHO. I have three sporrans, all bovine, and they all look great!

I do have an antique seal sporran, but would not buy a new one.
To me that would be like some one skinning one of my pet Shih Tzu's to make a Sporran out of it.

The hunting of seals will continue due to the over population of seals, the ban isn't going to lessen it. It is done as humanly as possible as per regulations as opposed to PETA distruths. I respect your choice but I do ask All of the seal is used, meat oils and pelts, so how is this different from bovine?

Lead front page article in this morning's Vancouver Sun: "Members of Parliament from all parties voted unanimously Wednesday in favour of a Bloc Quebecois motion calling on the government to come up with a way to integrate seal pelts into the athletes’ uniforms.

“With the upcoming Winter Olympics that will be in Vancouver in 2010, the government has a chance to offer some concrete action to promote seal products,” Bloc Quebec MP Raynald Blais said."

It has been a long time since every Member of Parliament in Canada voted in favour of any motion.

Looks like sealskin sporrans for all our athletes! I don't personally wear sealskin sporrans because I don't wear something I don't eat. But I don't begrudge others choice to wear one.

EU regulations also force fishermen to throw fish accidentally netted that do not fit certain specifications back into the sea. Their swim bladders are already ruptured and they will not survive or breed afterwards but they must be wasted on principle nevertheless.

One wonders where the logic is.

Sporrans are a limited market and seal fur ones are not going to severely decrease the seal population. So it can be seen as an attack upon a traditional way of dress by the anti fur brigade who are not directly affected themselves by the move and who have long had the freedom of choice to go for substitutes themselves.

Exactly. With an enlarged international ban culling will continue and the carcasses will be used as before. It's the good use of the skins we are discussing here. Sporrans are traditional, as are coats.
