The snaps were getting stuck (wedged) into the tool. 1 size smaller, and it wouldn't have had that problem, but I wanted them close to the size I had before.

I made something similar to use with my nylon sporran. I often pair it with a nylon "work or tool" belt from Home Depot or Lowes. I think that gives a fairly casual look. I like the way nylon parts seem to match.

Another possibility would be to make the nylon a little longer and get some swivel snap rings from the hardware store. They have a swivel loop in the one end so you don't need rings, they have a snap closure at the lower end so they hook into the rings on the short leather piece on the back of the sporran. I'm currently on the ship so I'm unable to proved any pics, but I get off next week and could include some at that time, if I can figure out how to post pics. Let me know if you're interested.
