A while back, I posted a picture of myself wearing my straw farming hat and asking Jock if it looked all right. He said it looked fine. I also had a picture of my canvas, wide-brimmed Indiana Joans looking hat. He said that was fine, too. He also said the Panache pith helmit was fine.
MacMillan of Rathdown has also said he wears a Panama hat with or without the kilt.
That pretty much covers all the broad-brim and sun hats, even the ones not directly approved, as far as I am concerned.
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…

It doesn't cover cowboy hats, or RCMP / state trooper Stetsons, Ted. I would not wear either of those. Nor a slouch hat, I think.

Actually, a slouch hat is quite appropriate:

And remember, a slouch/cowboy hat may be worn with a "Montana Peak". I wore my M1885 US Army Campaign hat to a local games once with my kilt and a khaki shirt to keep the sun off, and it was blocked in a "Montana Peak":

Mind you, the one pictured here is more of the New Zealand "Lemon Squeezer" style, but I have seen a picture of a Kiwi piper wearing one somewhere.

As far as I know, Jock Scot has approved those styles of hats. My canvas hat is somewhat clost to the look of those, and it was directly approved by Jock. That is all I am saying. If they don't look right to you, then I would not try to force you to wear or not wear them.

I love my Tilley hat. I am fair skinned as well and burn quickly in the sun. And since I lack coverage on top, my Tilley hat is a necessity.

I would just wear what makes you feel comfortable..there are no real rules.. Just guidelines.. If you want wear a palm leaf sombrero, because of your issues with the sun..wear it. Your health is more important than someone elses opinion.

If I owned a giant, Mexican sombrero, the kind you could shade a small market place with, I would wear it with a kilt.

I plan to get a fedora, a la Indiana Jones. Why not wear that with a kilt?

I prefer Panamas. They are light, airy, comfortable, and last indefinitely if cared for, or about 6-10 years if treated with indifference.
