Around here the empolyees in Hancock and Joanne's fabric know significantly less than I do about the kinds of fabric I might want to buy. Now, they may know a lot about making prom dresses, but my stuff....clueless.
So I'd echo what Steve says. Just go to the store semi-regularly and keep checking until you find what you want.
For online tartan purchases, , well, I've bought most of it from Fraser and Kirkbright. I am a HUGE fan of Fraser and Kirkbright.

Aldisimo: I've heard of Britex and it looks like they will send swatches, so that may wind up being my solution.
Wizard: Thanks for the info about the fabric industry. It was very interesting, even if a little disappointing.
Attworth: I followed your post and I have the site bookmarked, but I was hoping for a bigger color selection.
Alan: The Joanne's employees here are just as unhelpful for what I'm looking for as yours.
I'm still open to suggestions, so if anyone else has some advice, I'd appreciate it.

David,
If you will describe the fabric you are looking for perhaps I have some here in the shop I could sell you.

Just because you are paranoid doesn't mean they aren't out to get you.

My local stores don't know much about making anything other than quilts.
That's what people make, so that's what they know. And that's what they stock. the local Joanns has a horrible selection of notions, interfacings, and such. They do have fantastic selection of plastic rules, rotary cutters, cutting mats, and books on quilting.
