contrary to what you are being told about Chattan, you can not wear it. the Chattan tartan is reserved solely for the use of the clan chief and his family (at least that's what it tells me in my Complete Book Of Tartan by Iain Zaczek & Charles Phillips).
With all due respect, the latter is quite incorrect. The Chattan tartan was formerly known as "Mackintosh Chief", but even in those far-off days it was not a reserved tartan.

As for the Davidson tartans, they are readily available today from most Scottish mills. Check the websites for House of Edgar, Strathmore, Lochcarron, DC Dalgleish -- all of those, and others, stock several versions of Davidson and Davidson of Tulloch tartans.
